Antivirus software will often incorrectly flag and delete CrossOver files, which results in CrossOver not working correctly. If you have antivirus software installed, you need to manually add CrossOver and its associated files as exceptions to prevent your antivirus from quarantining and removing needed files.
We can assure you that CrossOver does not contain viruses. We have taken the steps that we can to make our files look less suspicious to the antivirus algorithms, but antivirus softwares still flag some of our files because they look like Windows files on a non-Windows operating system.
Antivirus software can cause trouble for CrossOver both during and after installation. If your antivirus software quarantines or deletes CrossOver files that it erroneously flags as malicious, you will get error messages when trying to install Windows applications with CrossOver. If you are already in this position, you need to fully uninstall CrossOver before proceeding with our recommended strategies listed below.
- Temporarily disable your antivirus software (see support links below for vendor-specific instructions).
- Install CrossOver.
- Add exceptions for the following files to your antivirus (see support links below for vendor-specific instructions):
/Users/(your home folder)/Applications/CrossOver
-
/Users/(your home folder)/Library/Application Support/CrossOver
Note: The Library folder is hidden by default. To show hidden folders, press ⌘ (command)+Shift+. (period). -
/Applications/CrossOver.app
If you did not install CrossOver by choosing Move to Applications or you changed the file name, adjust your paths accordingly.
- After CrossOver is installed and exceptions are added, you can enable your antivirus software again
If you are unable to disable your antivirus software, you can try adding the exceptions listed above before attempting to install CrossOver.

If you run into false positives, we highly recommend that you report them to your antivirus software vendor. It's possible that the antivirus algorithms will get updated if enough people report the problem. Links to the false positive reporting tools for various antivirus software vendors are provided below:
